Summer Term 2019
We have been busy learning about our local area this term. We had an amazing tour of the local area, visiting key sites such as the Darley Oak, The Hurlers, King Doniert's Stone and Golitha Falls. The children designed a wonderful fairy village which they then built for the fairies at Golitha. The children then wrote some fantastic travel guides encouraging people to visit our area. Check out the gallery to see some photos!

We are now into the second half of the summer term where we are learning about inspiring architects and engineers. We will be looking at historical figures such as Isambard K Brunel as well as modern day figures such as Roma Agrawar. Roma has sent us some engaging activity ideas and lovely words of inspiration to encourage children to take an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

We have introduced Talk4Writing across the school and are in full swing of our first teaching sequence. We are innovating the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and also reading other versions of the story to get new ideas for plots.
Spring Term 2019
This term, we are learning all about Africa. We will be looking closer at the Bwindi National Park in Uganda and comparing the types of plants and animals that we would find there to those that we would find on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

We have been looking closer at the story 'Handa's Surprise' and have tasted the 7 different fruits that Handa collected for her friend Akeyo. We also tasted the surprise fruit that was found at the end of the story! We are looking forward to writing our own version of the story using a Talk 4 Writing style.
In maths, we have moved on to looking at multiplication and division. Year 1 have had fun making equal groups of objects and saying a multiplication sentence. Year 2 are beginning to link equal groups to multiplication number sentences. To help you child with this, I have assigned the multiplication and division unit as homework on the Mathletics app. You can also play some Top Marks games: click here.

We are making our own African musical instruments and will use these to perform a song that we have been learning. We have also created some beautiful sunset silhouette paintings, have a look at them on display in our classroom!

Please remember to keep reading at home :)
Below are the speed spellings for the children in Henwood to learn this term.
