EYFS 1 & 2 - Stara Class

Welcome to
Stara Class

We are an Early Years class of 21 mixed aged EYFS 1 and 2 children (Pre-school and Reception). We have a large spacious classroom and a beautiful and well equipped outside area which we have access to all year round. This is a safe and purposeful area which is solely used by Stara Class. We also have extensive grounds which we can use such as a school field, playground and wooded area which we share with the rest of the school.

Stara Class is taught by Mrs Hall and her fabulous teaching assistants. These are Mrs Srike, Mrs Humphries, Mrs Easy, Mrs Henderson and Mrs Morse. We teach following the EYFS curriculum 'Development Matters' and continuously strive to provide the children with a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum.

General Information

Reading - Please read with your child as frequently as possible. We will start off by sending home lilac level reading books. These books have no words and the aim is for children to tell the story using the pictures to help develop key language skills and story structure. Your child will also have a set of flashcards to help them identify letters and sounds along with a library book to share at home. When children are able to 'blend' sounds and start to read short words, pink level books will be issued to stretch and challenge children and build on their reading skill and vocabulary. Your help and support with reading can really enhance their reading development and confidence. If you would like more advice and information about the teaching of reading, please see Mrs Hall who will be more than happy to discuss this area of learning in more detail.

Homework - Look out for our new exciting homework projects for the term. These activities have been carefully planned to support and build on your child's learning in school. The idea is to complete the homework together so you have the opportunity to enrich and extend learning and understanding. The homework is not compulsory but please have some fun and have a go!! Children earn points and can achieve a bronze, silver or gold certificate which will be celebrated in assembly at the end of the term.

Forest school - This will take place on a Monday and Wednesday morning for EYFS 1 children (pre school) and on Monday afternoons for EYFS 2 children (Reception). Sessions are taught in our very own wooded area by Nicola Plummer who is Forest School trained. Please ensure waterproof clothes and wellington boots are kept in school each day as we will often be working outside linked to all areas of our learning.

PE - We have the brilliant Mr Jones teaching PE this term. PE will be on a Tuesday morning and a full kit is needed in school all week. PE will be taught to the whole class and both EYFS 1 and 2 children will benefit from an experienced and dedicated PE teacher.

Yoga - We offer yoga at Upton Cross ACE Academy and Natalie Strike will deliver a session to both EYFS 1 and 2 children (separately) on a Wednesday afternoon. Yoga offers many health benefits and a great sense of well being.

If you have any questions or queries about your child please come and see us after school. Thank you for all your wonderful help and support as always.

Many thanks

Mrs Hall and her super Stara team

Summer Term 2019
This term we are launching into an exciting topic all about transport. Due to the nature of Early Years, this could go in many different directions as we will do our best to follow the interests and fascinations of the children. This may include diggers, trains, hot air balloons, boats etc. We will arrange a school trip linked to transport once we get going.
We are adopting 'Talk for writing' in EYFS and this is a great tool to boost communication skills and really focus on using this to improve writing and early mark making.
Look out for our homework projects which are very 'transport' related. These are great fun and will really help enrich the children's learning.
